- Spotter Tab Boyd lost job after critical social media post
- Boyd was working with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. during the Mexico City race
- Carson Hocevar also fined $50,000 for separate offensive comment
NASCAR spotter Tab Boyd has been dismissed from his role following a controversial social media post about the series’ first-ever Cup race in Mexico City.
Boyd, who was spotting for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and the No. 47 Chevrolet, posted a since-deleted message expressing frustration with the trip. “I’m ready to go home, screw this place, people can talk it up all they want…can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched…in less than 5 minutes. Good area my a–,” he wrote.
Hyak Motorsports terminated Boyd’s contract last week in response. Stenhouse addressed the situation ahead of the Pocono race weekend, confirming Boyd’s departure and the arrival of new spotter Clayton Hughes.
“You know, obviously, that’s an unfortunate deal. The team let Tab Boyd go this week, and we got Clayton Hughes to come fill in. I’ve never worked with Clayton,” Stenhouse said. “You know, obviously, I think the concern for me is trying to get on the same page as quickly as we can knowing that, like you said, the schedule coming up, going to Atlanta next week could be a very important race for our team and trying to get us into the Playoffs and put us in the right position.”
Stenhouse finished 27th in Mexico City and came in 30th at Pocono on Sunday. Boyd, meanwhile, is now out of a job.
His dismissal coincides with disciplinary action taken against NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar, who also made derogatory remarks about Mexico. During a live Twitch broadcast, Hocevar referred to the country as a “s——e.” He was fined $50,000, with the funds designated for Mexican charities, and must also undergo mandatory cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.
