Katherine Legge Breaks New Ground As First Woman In Cup Since ’18

Katherine Legge is set to make history this weekend at Phoenix Raceway, becoming the first woman to compete in a NASCAR Cup Series race since Danica Patrick’s 2018 Daytona 500 run.

The 44-year-old from Guildford, England, will pilot the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports in Sunday’s Shriners Children’s 500, the team announced Monday.

Legge’s no stranger to speed, with five Xfinity Series starts—most recently Road America in 2023—and a 2024 IndyCar stint, including four Indianapolis 500s, where she clocked the fastest qualifying time by a woman in 2023. “Entering the NASCAR Cup Series is a dream come true,” Legge said. “I’m excited to team up with Live Fast Motorsports for Phoenix, and to represent our sponsors DROPLiGHT and Sherfick Companies. Racing stockcars has been an incredibly fun and new challenge that’s given me a renewed sense of vigor for this sport. As always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to do what I love and am inspired by all of the effort, preparation and behind the scenes work it takes to get here.”

Live Fast co-owner Jessica McLeod added: “We’re happy to partner with Katherine for this race. The opportunity to have such a versatile and dynamic championship winning driver join our program is exciting for everyone on our team. This partnership reflects our commitment to providing opportunities for drivers making their way into the NASCAR Cup series in the Next Gen era.”

DROPLiGHT CEO Joseph Anderson said: “As DROPLiGHT makes its debut as a sponsor in the racing world, there’s no better place to start than Phoenix and no better driver to represent our brand than Katherine Legge. Her resilience, skill, and trailblazing spirit align perfectly with our commitment to innovation and excellence. We’re proud to support her journey and excited to see our name at high speed on the track.”

Sherfick Companies CEO Michael Sherfick echoed: “Sponsoring talented drivers has always been about more than just branding—it’s about supporting determination, precision and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Katherine Legge embodies those qualities and we’re proud to stand behind her as she takes on Phoenix. At Sherfick Companies, we believe in investing in those who push boundaries, and Katherine is a perfect example of that drive and passion.”
