- Haas has confirmed Esteban Ocon will not race again during the 2026 Formula 1 season following a reported confrontation with team principal Ayao Komatsu at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
- Ferrari junior Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut on home soil at the São Paulo Grand Prix, bringing forward his planned 2027 promotion to replace Ocon alongside Oliver Bearman.
- The abrupt departure follows a disagreement over Ocon’s practice programme in Mexico, with Haas declining to disclose the full circumstances and the Frenchman’s Formula 1 future remaining uncertain.
Esteban Ocon’s tenure with Haas has come to an acrimonious conclusion, with the American outfit confirming that the Frenchman will not return to a race seat for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season following a reported confrontation with team principal Ayao Komatsu.
The decision brings an abrupt end to Ocon’s two-year association with Haas, accelerating an already confirmed departure which was originally scheduled to take place at the conclusion of the current campaign.
Ferrari junior Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix, having previously been announced as Ocon’s replacement for 2027.
A remarkable turn of events for the Brazilian, whose anticipated promotion has arrived considerably earlier than expected, while Ocon’s Formula 1 future has been thrown into further uncertainty.
The decision follows a turbulent Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, where Ocon was unexpectedly withdrawn from competition following Friday’s practice sessions.
According to The Race, tensions between the Frenchman and Komatsu escalated following a disagreement over the team’s approach to his second practice programme.
Ocon had expressed frustration over being instructed to complete a longer race simulation on medium compound tyres rather than softs, with the decision informed by data gathered from teammate Oliver Bearman’s running.
While the exchange initially appeared relatively innocuous, subsequent discussions reportedly deteriorated into a confrontation serious enough for Haas to take immediate action.
Reports suggesting the altercation became physical have been denied by Ocon, while Haas has declined to disclose the precise circumstances surrounding the disagreement.
Komatsu confirms permanent split
Having initially replaced Ocon with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa for the remainder of the Mexican weekend, Haas has now confirmed that the Frenchman will not return to the cockpit this season.
“We have now notified Esteban Ocon that he will not return to a race seat with TGR Haas F1 Team this season,” Komatsu confirmed.
“Such decisions are never taken lightly, as was the case in Mexico City – but then, as now, we feel this is firmly in the best interests of the team moving forward.”
The Japanese team principal maintained that the discussions between the two parties would remain confidential, despite the considerable speculation surrounding Ocon’s departure.
“The conversations that ultimately unfolded between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter, and we will continue to respect the private nature of closed-door situations.”
It represents a particularly disappointing conclusion to a partnership which had promised to provide Haas with an experienced foundation alongside the emerging talent of Bearman.
However, with the relationship reportedly deteriorating against the backdrop of Ocon’s impending replacement, the events in Mexico City appear to have rendered any prospect of reconciliation untenable.
Câmara handed unexpected opportunity
The circumstances have nevertheless presented an extraordinary opportunity for Câmara, who will make his Grand Prix debut on home soil at Interlagos.
Having already established himself as one of Ferrari’s most promising young drivers, the Brazilian now faces the considerable challenge of adapting to Formula 1 machinery during the closing stages of the championship.
His promotion follows an impressive maiden appearance from Hirakawa, who was drafted into the Haas seat at short notice in Mexico City.

The Japanese driver subsequently secured a championship point after post-race penalties elevated him to tenth, providing Haas with a valuable result in its constructors’ championship battle with Audi.
And while Hirakawa’s performance demonstrated the potential benefits of the team’s unexpected driver reshuffle, Câmara’s arrival signals a longer-term change in direction.
For Ocon, meanwhile, the departure marks another difficult chapter in a Formula 1 career which has already included periods of considerable uncertainty.
A Grand Prix winner with Alpine, the Frenchman arrived at Haas with the experience and pedigree to help guide the team forward.
Instead, his tenure has concluded prematurely amid circumstances which have overshadowed his performances on the circuit.
With Haas now turning its attention towards the next generation, Ocon faces the unenviable prospect of watching the remaining races from the sidelines.
An extraordinary fall from favour for a driver who, little more than a week ago, was still expected to complete the season in familiar surroundings.
