Rafael Câmara embracing pressure ahead of Haas F1 debut in Brazil

  • Ferrari junior Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut with Haas at the São Paulo Grand Prix following Esteban Ocon’s early departure.
  • The 21-year-old Brazilian is focused on managing expectations as he prepares to race at Interlagos for the first time.
  • Câmara’s unexpected promotion leaves his Formula 2 championship pursuit uncertain, with two rounds remaining in the season.

Brazilian rising star Rafael Câmara is determined to remain composed ahead of his unexpected Formula 1 debut at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix, insisting that external expectations will not distract him from the considerable challenge awaiting at Interlagos.

The 21-year-old Ferrari junior has been thrust into the spotlight following Haas’ decision to prematurely end Esteban Ocon’s 2026 campaign, accelerating a promotion originally scheduled for next season.

With the opportunity arriving on home soil, Câmara faces the extraordinary prospect of making his Grand Prix debut in front of a passionate Brazilian crowd, having never previously driven the Interlagos circuit or Haas’ current machinery.

Nevertheless, the Formula 2 championship leader remains characteristically measured about the occasion.

“I think for myself, whatever people are speaking about or whatever is happening outside has never really been a problem,” Câmara explained during Thursday’s media commitments.

“I always try to just focus on my side, focus on things that I can control, and whatever is happening outside is not really in my control.”

His promotion follows a turbulent period for Haas, with Ocon’s withdrawal during the Mexico City Grand Prix opening the door for reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa.

The Japanese driver subsequently impressed on his maiden Formula 1 appearance, securing a valuable championship point after finishing tenth.

However, Hirakawa’s World Endurance Championship commitments this weekend have provided Câmara with an earlier-than-anticipated opportunity to begin his Formula 1 career.

A steep learning curve at Interlagos

Despite his impressive junior category credentials, Câmara faces a formidable learning curve, with limited preparation time before taking to the circuit.

Having already undertaken simulator work through Ferrari’s driver development programme, the Brazilian believes the experience will provide a useful foundation.

“I still did some simulator work with Ferrari because I was supposed to have FP1 [as a young driver later in the year], so it was good to have some laps on the simulator,” he explained.

“I’ve never driven here, but with these simulator sessions, I think it should be alright. We have three sessions, and then definitely you can build from these sessions.”

The availability of three practice sessions will provide a welcome opportunity to familiarise himself with the car and circuit before qualifying.

Meanwhile, Câmara’s unexpected promotion introduces another complication to an already significant season.

The Brazilian currently leads the Formula 2 standings in his rookie campaign, with two rounds remaining in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Whether he will return to complete his championship pursuit remains unresolved, with Haas yet to confirm his participation.

For now, Câmara is refusing to look beyond the immediate challenge.

Having already secured his place on the 2027 grid, the youngster can approach his maiden appearance with an opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of his first full campaign.

And while the circumstances surrounding his promotion have been far from conventional, a Formula 1 debut on home soil represents a remarkable milestone for one of Brazil’s most promising talents.
